Appearance
Valerius Thorne is a broad-shouldered half-elf with iron-gray eyes, close-cropped dark hair, and the steady hands of a craftsman. His left forearm bears faint, pale scars from old burns and bandage work, and a newer, cleaner scar rests near his ribs where death once found him. He wears practical scale mail over plain travel clothes, a well-kept shield on one arm, and a simple holy symbol at his throat. Though his face is severe at first glance, his expression softens when he looks at the injured or the humble.
Mannerisms
Valerius speaks after a brief pause, as if weighing each word for usefulness. He unconsciously checks wounds, straps, and buckles when nervous, and he bows his head before tending anyone, even if they do not share his faith. In conversation, he often folds his hands behind his back like a village master reviewing a task well done.
Personality
Calm, methodical, and quietly compassionate, Valerius believes that every action should serve a purpose. He is courteous without being warm, protective without being overbearing, and deeply respectful toward work done well. He trusts endurance, routine, and honest effort, and he prefers to solve conflict by preserving as many lives as possible rather than by seeking punishment or praise.
Ideals
Duty. A life saved creates an obligation to protect life wherever it is threatened. Mercy, properly practiced, is not softness, it is discipline.
Bonds
The child he shielded still lives in his thoughts, and Valerius silently counts every life he saves as a debt repaid to that day. He carries his mother's holy symbol and his father's iron work chisel, proof that mercy and craft both shaped him. He is bound to the priest who raised and trained him, and to the town whose people gave him a first, humble place in the world.
Flaws
Valerius mistakes obedience for virtue too easily, and he struggles when compassion requires breaking a rule. He can become grimly stubborn in the face of needless risk, judging reckless allies more harshly than enemies. He also finds it difficult to accept help for himself, as though needing care would somehow diminish the gift of the life he was given back.
Quirks
Background
Valerius Thorne was born between two worlds and learned to honor both. His human father hammered iron in the village forge, shaping horseshoes, hinges, and farm tools with the same careful discipline he gave to every honest task. His elven mother served the chapel as healer and caretaker, tending fevers, cleansing wounds, and easing the pain of anyone who came to her door, whether they could pray properly or not. From his father, Valerius learned patience, labor, and the dignity of structure. From his mother, he learned that mercy can be as steady and exacting as any hammer strike. He grew up carrying water, splitting kindling, running messages, and helping where the work was hardest and the praise least likely to come. That life ended in fire when bandits attacked the town for coin and supplies. Valerius threw himself between the raiders and a small child, buying precious moments with his own body. He drove them off, but not before suffering a mortal wound. The local priest, moved by his selfless act, called upon the power of life itself and returned Valerius to the world. Resurrection changed him. He became that priest's student, devouring every lesson on healing, protection, and the sacred duty to preserve life. When his training was complete, Valerius was sent to Leukopolis to answer the call for heroes, scholars, and warriors to join the new guild. He travels with a healer's hands, a worker's discipline, and a pilgrim's resolve, determined to prove that the life restored to him was not wasted. He seeks not glory or coin, but duty, and the chance to help others endure the journeys that he survived by grace and stubborn will.
“From his father, Valerius learned patience, labor, and the dignity of structure.”
