Appearance
Ketek Tavil is a compact, weathered human with copper-brown skin, close-cropped black hair, and a narrow scar running from the left temple to the cheek. Their eyes are gray-green and watchful. They wear dented chain mail beneath a dark blue tabard, carry a plain iron shield marked with a faded regimental knot, and keep their holy symbol tied beneath the collar rather than displayed openly. Their bearing is disciplined, but their equipment shows the practical wear of someone who has spent more time repairing gear than replacing it.
Mannerisms
Ketek checks exits before sitting, silently counts people whenever a group enters a room, and keeps one hand near their shield strap when conversations become tense. They address strangers formally until given a reason not to, then become unexpectedly blunt.
Personality
Ketek is quiet, practical, and intensely observant. They show affection by checking armor straps, splitting rations evenly, and taking the coldest watch without mentioning it. They have little patience for grand speeches, but they listen closely when someone describes a fear or a need. Their dry humor appears at the worst possible moments, usually delivered without changing expression.
Ideals
Protection. A uniform, oath, or holy symbol means nothing if it does not compel you to protect the person standing behind you.
Bonds
The survivors of Ketek’s dissolved regiment are their family. Ketek carries the regiment’s broken insignia and will risk almost anything to locate missing veterans or protect the civilians left behind during the retreat.
Flaws
Ketek assumes every promise has a hidden condition and every leader is waiting for an excuse to abandon someone. When frightened, they become controlling and issue orders to friends who never agreed to follow them.
Quirks
Background
Ketek Tavil grew up in a river garrison where human families, traders, and retired soldiers lived behind the same rough palisade. Their mother repaired harnesses, their father kept the watch roster, and Ketek learned early that an army survives less through heroic charges than through dry socks, counted arrows, and someone remembering who has not come back from patrol. They entered service as soon as they were old enough, becoming a reliable shield-bearer despite lacking the strength and presence expected of a celebrated warrior. During a disastrous retreat, Ketek found a wounded standard-bearer beneath a collapsed supply wagon. With the enemy closing in, they prayed without knowing to whom, pressed a hand against the soldier’s chest, and felt warmth answer beneath their palm. The soldier lived long enough to lead civilians to safety, but the regiment was later abandoned by its commander and dissolved in disgrace. Ketek now follows a sacred oath not yet fully named, protecting ordinary people from the indifference of officers, nobles, and gods alike. They adventure to learn what answered that first prayer, and to prove that duty means standing with the helpless even when no banner remains.
“During a disastrous retreat, Ketek found a wounded standard-bearer beneath a collapsed supply wagon.”
