Appearance
Baarbi is a powerfully built human woman with a rangy, athletic frame, sun-browned skin, and thick dark hair usually tied high to keep it clear of her face. She stands with her weight balanced on the balls of her feet, as though every conversation might become a race or a wrestling match. In crowded rooms she occupies more space than she seems to realize, but she is quick to shift aside when someone smaller needs passage. Her clothing combines practical travel gear with unmistakable noble touches, including a well-cut burgundy cloak, polished riding boots, and a silver signet ring worn on a cord around her neck.
Mannerisms
When waiting, Baarbi plants her feet wide and rocks subtly from heel to toe. She touches the signet ring at her throat before making a promise, speaks to servants and nobles in exactly the same direct tone, and often rolls her shoulders as though preparing for a bout. She laughs suddenly and loudly when surprised.
Personality
Baarbi is forthright, protective, and intensely energetic. She has the manners of a court-bred noble but the instincts of a trail scout, often offering blunt honesty where diplomacy would be wiser. She admires competence in any form, especially the quiet competence of people who keep communities alive. Although she dislikes being treated as fragile or ornamental, she secretly enjoys music, embroidered clothing, and being invited to formal dances.
Ideals
Protection. Privilege means responsibility. If my name opens a door, I must use it to let someone else escape danger.
Bonds
She carries her family signet and intends to restore her house's reputation by deeds rather than ceremony. She is especially protective of displaced villagers, servants, and other people whom powerful families overlook.
Flaws
Baarbi treats patience as something other people owe her. She is quick to challenge condescension, slow to admit fear, and liable to turn a manageable disagreement into a public contest of honor. When embarrassed, she becomes aggressively helpful rather than apologizing.
Quirks
Background
Baarbi was born into a minor human noble house whose lands were more useful than prosperous. Her family maintained a fortified estate on the edge of settled territory, where formal dinners were held within sight of fields that needed defending. She was expected to learn etiquette, genealogy, and the careful art of making powerful people feel respected. Instead, she spent her lessons watching the household guards train, then sneaking outside to practice with their weapons and race the stable hands across the hills. When raiders threatened the estate during her sixteenth year, Baarbi discovered that the rage she had always treated as an embarrassing temper could become a weapon. She held a collapsing gate long enough for villagers to escape, fighting with a woodcutter's axe and refusing to fall even after the guards had withdrawn. Her family praised her courage but feared the wildness behind it, arranging a respectable life for her far from danger. Baarbi left before the arrangement could be completed. She now travels as a wandering protector, determined to prove that nobility is not a title inherited from the past, but a promise made to those who cannot defend themselves.
