Appearance
Sasha Shestak is a broad-shouldered human man with weather-browned skin, a close-cropped beard, and dark hair kept severely short for military practicality. His coat and armor are meticulously maintained, but his hands are permanently rough from drill yards, reins, and whetstones. He wears a faded blue scarf wound twice around his neck, the only soft and personal item in an otherwise disciplined outfit. His gaze is direct and alert, and he has a habit of standing as though he expects the ground to shift beneath him.
Mannerisms
Sasha checks the buckles on his armor whenever a conversation becomes tense. He addresses strangers by surname until invited to do otherwise, and he quietly counts exits whenever he enters a building.
Personality
Sasha is blunt, observant, and unexpectedly patient with frightened civilians. He has little tolerance for theatrics, but a dry, almost private humor appears when camp life becomes miserable. He treats preparation as a form of kindness and would rather carry extra rope, food, and bandages than trust luck.
Ideals
No banner is sacred enough to justify sacrificing people who cannot defend themselves. Orders are tools, not absolution.
Bonds
The people of Vaskor Ford sheltered me when my army abandoned them. I will answer any honest call for their defense, no matter who sends it.
Flaws
I mistake hesitation for cowardice, including in people who have earned the right to be afraid. Once I decide someone is being abandoned, I become nearly impossible to command.
Quirks
Background
Sasha Shestak grew up in a river town where ferry crews, caravan guards, and militia patrols all competed for the same narrow strip of dry ground. He learned early that courage was less useful than reliability. At seventeen, he joined a regional infantry company after helping evacuate civilians during a border raid. He became a soldier who remembered names, counted rations twice, and could keep a frightened line from breaking with nothing more than a steady voice and a raised shield. Years of service made Sasha excellent at surviving bad orders, worse weather, and commanders who mistook pride for strategy. He left active duty after refusing to abandon a village that had been marked as an acceptable loss. The order was obeyed by others, but Sasha stayed, organized a defense with farmers and teamsters, and brought most of the villagers out alive. His former officers call him insubordinate. The people he saved call him when trouble comes. Now he travels as a fighter-for-hire, choosing causes by the people endangered rather than the banners involved.
