Appearance
Marek Nadi is a lean half-elf man with warm brown skin, dark auburn hair kept short at the sides, and slightly pointed ears usually half-hidden beneath a weathered green cap. His amber-brown eyes are alert without being theatrical. His hands are his most noticeable feature, broad-palmed and roughened across the fingertips from years of handling strings, cheap locks, sealing wax, and stage props. His voice arrives after a small pause and a quiet clearing of the throat, as if he is selecting which version of the truth will do the least damage. He dresses in a patched but carefully brushed leather jerkin, a faded blue shirt, and practical boots, with a lute case worn smooth at the handle.
Mannerisms
Before answering a difficult question, Marek pauses, clears his throat softly, and looks at the speaker's hands instead of their face. He keeps one thumb resting against the edge of his lute pick when nervous, and his polite smile becomes noticeably wider when he is lying.
Personality
Marek is observant, courteous, and difficult to surprise. He treats every conversation like a negotiation, but not every negotiation like a battle. He enjoys honest people because they are rare, though he distrusts anyone who advertises their honesty. Beneath his practiced ease is a tired sympathy for people who have been pushed into becoming someone else just to get by.
Ideals
Practical freedom. Truth is valuable, but so is survival, and no one has the right to demand honesty from a person who has not earned trust.
Bonds
He carries the original signet from the merchant house whose conspiracy he exposed, and he intends to learn who commissioned the forgery that started the entire affair. He also sends a portion of every profitable haul to his mother, under a different name each time.
Flaws
He cannot resist improving a lie, even when the first version was already good enough. When cornered, he becomes so committed to maintaining a false identity that he may protect it at the expense of common sense.
Quirks
Background
Marek Nadi grew up between two kinds of welcome. His human mother worked the counting room of a riverside warehouse, while his elven father played music in taverns where nobody asked too many questions as long as the patrons kept drinking. Marek learned early that half-elves are often offered a seat near the door, close enough to be useful and far enough to be forgotten. He made himself difficult to forget. He learned songs, card tricks, hand signs, and the patient craft of listening for the lie underneath a person's story. By adulthood, Marek had become a modestly successful charlatan, selling forged letters, invented blessings, and urgent advice to people who wanted certainty more than truth. He was never cruel enough to ruin the desperate, and never honest enough to call himself kind. His work changed when a forged inheritance document accidentally exposed a real conspiracy involving a merchant house and several officials. Marek escaped with his life, his lute, and one stolen identity that still has people looking for him. Now he travels as a bard, trading music and small deceptions for food, information, and the occasional chance to correct a balance he pretends not to care about.
