Appearance
A lean tiefling man with deep crimson skin, swept-back black horns, and faint gold-amber eyes that seem to glow in shadow. He keeps his dark hair tied back with a strip of red cloth, wears worn leather armor under a charcoal hooded coat, and carries himself like someone always half a step from trouble. A thin silver chain hangs at his throat, and his tail flicks impatiently whenever he is lying, which is often.
Mannerisms
He speaks softly and often pauses before key words as if testing their weight. When thinking, he taps one horn with a finger, and when amused, his tail curls around the leg of the nearest chair or crate.
Personality
Sharp-witted, sly, and impossible to fully trust, Varrik treats every room like a puzzle and every promise like a trap. He is charming when it helps, sarcastic when it does not, and surprisingly generous to anyone who has been bullied by people with cleaner hands than his.
Ideals
Freedom. No throne, temple, guild, or hellish patron should own a person's choices. If he must break rules to prove that, he will.
Bonds
He keeps a brass signet ring taken from the first noble house that tried to have him quietly ruined, and he will not part with it until that family is exposed or broken.
Flaws
He cannot resist a challenge to his pride, especially if someone suggests he is predictable. When frightened, he laughs first and thinks later, which has landed him in worse trouble than most honest crimes ever could.
Quirks
Background
Varrik was born in a riverport that never quite decided whether it feared tieflings or simply resented them. His horns marked him as an outsider before he could speak, and by the time he was old enough to understand that strangers looked away from his smile, he had already learned the first rule of survival, never wait to be chosen, choose first. He became quick with locks, quicker with lies, and fast enough on his feet that the city watch started to learn his name in the same way they learned the names of alley cats and recurring headaches. The pact came during a botched burglary beneath a burned-out shrine, where a voice answered his angry joke to the dark. It offered power, protection, and the kind of attention no mortal ever gave freely. Varrik took the bargain because he was tired of being cornered by a world that called itself lawful while living off hidden cruelties. Now he works the edges of the city as thief, courier, and occasional problem solver for people who cannot afford honest help. He tells himself he serves no master, yet when the ember-bright force answers his call, he feels the same thrill as when a locked door finally gives way.
