Appearance
Brask is a broad, heavy-set half-orc with a working soldier's posture and a habit of standing too close without realizing it. His skin is muted olive-gray, his lower tusks are blunt from years of biting leather straps and hard bread, and his black hair is kept short with a strip of cord tied at the back. He wears a battered leather coat beneath his armor, its seams repaired with mismatched thread. He watches doorways, windows, and other people's hands before he looks at their faces. When he enters a room, he tends to occupy the center of it, then seems faintly surprised when everyone makes space.
Mannerisms
Brask plants both feet before speaking, as if every conversation might become a wrestling match. He checks exits without turning his head, rubs his thumb across his knuckles when thinking, and lowers his voice when angry instead of raising it. He often answers questions with a grunt first, then gives a surprisingly careful explanation after a long pause.
Personality
Brask is blunt, practical, and unexpectedly patient with frightened people. He distrusts polished manners but respects anyone who works with their hands. He prefers clear bargains to vague promises, and he treats a person's reaction under pressure as their truest introduction. Though he claims to dislike crowds, he always positions himself where everyone can see him.
Ideals
Freedom. No clan, commander, god, or patron owns my will. If I must serve, I will choose the terms and break them when they stop serving me.
Bonds
The wounded officer who taught Brask that mercy can be a weapon still carries his name in a military ledger, and Brask intends to find him again. He also keeps one red cord from his old clan's war banner, though he tells everyone it is merely useful for tying gear.
Flaws
Brask mistakes defiance for honesty and obedience for weakness. Once he decides someone has challenged him, he becomes stubborn enough to ruin a useful plan simply to prove he cannot be pushed. He is also afraid that the voice in his head is becoming more familiar because it is becoming more like him.
Quirks
Background
Brask was raised among the Red Maw, an orc clan that valued endurance, obedience, and the clean certainty of strength. He was never the strongest of his generation, but he was difficult to kill and nearly impossible to frighten. When the clan marched against a fortified human settlement, Brask found a wounded enemy officer trapped beneath a collapsed gate. Instead of finishing him, Brask dragged him clear and accepted the man's offer of a strange bargain. The voice behind the bargain belonged to a presence of fire and hunger, a power that promised Brask the strength to survive any battlefield in exchange for service whenever the patron called.
