Appearance
Stavros is a broad-shouldered human man with close-cropped iron-gray hair, a neatly trimmed square beard, and a severe, disciplined posture. His dark eyes constantly assess distance, exits, weapons, and weaknesses. He wears immaculate chain mail beneath a crimson officer's surcoat, with a polished greatsword kept in a plain black scabbard. A brass military whistle hangs from a cord at his throat, heavily worn smooth where his thumb repeatedly rubs it. His boots and armor are maintained with almost vain precision, while his left glove is permanently darkened by weapon oil and ash. He carries himself like a commander inspecting troops, even in a tavern.
Mannerisms
Stavros taps the brass whistle at his throat whenever he is thinking. He gives orders in a quiet voice and grows louder only when he wants an entire room to hear his anger. Before any fight, he silently counts exits, allies, and elevated positions on his fingers. He expects subordinates to stand when he enters and corrects their posture without asking permission.
Personality
Stavros is brutally direct, methodical, and perpetually impatient. He respects competence regardless of rank, but he treats emotional hesitation as a defect to be corrected. He is not needlessly loud or theatrical. His menace comes from the calm certainty that he has already considered how to punish failure. In private, he studies maps and battle reports with almost scholarly devotion, searching for the single decision that made victory inevitable.
Ideals
Order. Freedom is merely the privilege of the strong to choose the rules. A disciplined hierarchy is kinder than chaos because everyone knows exactly who will suffer when the plan fails.
Bonds
The brass whistle of his first commander is the only possession Stavros refuses to surrender. He intends to build an army disciplined enough to conquer a kingdom and orderly enough to make its people grateful for the chains.
Flaws
Stavros cannot tolerate public defiance. He interprets disagreement as insubordination and insubordination as treachery. He is quick to anger, slow to forgive, and so certain of his strategic superiority that he often fails to recognize when compassion would produce a better victory.
Quirks
Background
Stavros was raised in a provincial garrison where human recruits were taught that hunger, fear, and hesitation were merely enemy tactics turned inward. He entered military service as soon as he reached adulthood and proved unusually gifted at seeing battles as problems of supply, morale, terrain, and timing. He remembered every drill, every formation, and every officer who mistook cruelty for command. By his thirties, he had become the architect of several victories that saved armies while destroying the villages caught between them. His title, the Cardinal of War, began as an insult from soldiers who claimed that every decision he made had four points, four consequences, and four dead men beneath it. Stavros adopted the name and made it official among his followers. He now travels as a commander without a permanent army, gathering mercenaries, disgraced officers, and frightened opportunists around him. He believes order is not a virtue but a weapon, and that people are safest when someone ruthless enough is holding the hilt. Those who serve him know to bow to his whims, obey his signals, and never confuse his temporary favor with mercy.
“He remembered every drill, every formation, and every officer who mistook cruelty for command.”
