Appearance
Helen is a broad-shouldered human woman with weathered olive skin, storm-gray eyes, and thick auburn hair usually braided with strips of parchment. A small scar cuts through her left eyebrow, and ink stains permanently mark the fingers of her right hand. She dresses in practical travel leathers beneath a faded scholar's robe, carrying a heavy greataxe alongside a satchel filled with books, charcoal, and carefully folded notes.
Mannerisms
Helen quotes obscure historical sources during ordinary conversations, taps her thumb against her fingers while thinking, and treats her greataxe as though it were a pointer during lectures. When angry, she becomes unnervingly calm for a few seconds before her rage erupts.
Personality
Helen is intensely curious, direct, and unexpectedly warm toward ordinary people. She speaks like a lecturer even when discussing camp food, but she listens carefully when others share their experiences. She has a fierce instinct to defend outsiders, apprentices, and anyone whose voice is being ignored.
Ideals
Knowledge should shelter the vulnerable, not serve the powerful. Every truth worth preserving must eventually be placed in the hands of people brave enough to act on it.
Bonds
The surviving book from the burned archive is always at her side. Helen will risk almost anything to protect it and to recover the lost collection it represents.
Flaws
Helen becomes recklessly confrontational when someone dismisses knowledge, destroys a book, or mocks the dead. She also hides fear behind anger and would rather charge into danger than admit she does not understand what is happening.
Quirks
Background
Helen of Joy was raised in a small riverside archive where her mother copied legal records and her father repaired bindings. The name Joy came from the bright yellow banner that marked their family workshop, though Helen grew into it in a stranger way. She loved knowledge with an almost physical hunger, memorizing battlefield histories, monster anatomies, and ancient funeral rites. Her peaceful education ended when a band of raiders burned the archive to destroy a record that exposed their patron. Helen survived by barricading herself beneath a collapsed shelf, listening to the flames consume the work of generations. She emerged from the ruins carrying the archive's cracked quarterstaff and a single surviving book. Her grief became fury, and that fury became a weapon. Helen learned to fight from caravan guards, mercenaries, and anyone willing to correct her stance. She still studies every foe as if preparing a lecture, but when innocents are threatened, scholarly restraint gives way to a thunderous rage. She now travels to recover lost texts, protect vulnerable communities, and uncover the people who ordered the archive destroyed. She calls herself Helen of Joy because she refuses to let cruel people define what the word means.
