Appearance
Kabuklubağ is a broad-shelled male tortle with moss-green scales, amber eyes, and a weathered shell marked by faded blue spirals resembling ocean currents. He wears a salt-stained sailor's coat, a red sash, and a collection of tiny brass charms tied to his shell. His lute is built from driftwood, coral, and polished whalebone, and his smile is usually accompanied by a slow, thoughtful blink.
Mannerisms
He pauses for several seconds before answering serious questions, slowly tapping two claws against his shell. When excited, he rocks from side to side as if standing on a moving deck. He punctuates stories with exaggerated nautical gestures and addresses storms, ships, and large bodies of water as though they were old acquaintances.
Personality
Kabuklubağ is patient, theatrical, and endlessly curious. He treats every tavern, battlefield, and ship deck as a stage for a story that has not yet been told. He enjoys giving people fanciful nicknames, collects rumors as carefully as other sailors collect coins, and remains remarkably calm in danger unless someone threatens a member of his crew.
Ideals
Freedom. No person should be owned by a captain, a crown, or a cruel tradition. The sea belongs to everyone who respects its dangers.
Bonds
The Laughing Gull and its surviving crew are his chosen family. He carries a broken brass compass that belonged to the ship's former captain and intends to find the person responsible for the vessel's disappearance.
Flaws
Kabuklubağ cannot resist investigating a mystery, even when prudence demands that he leave it alone. He is also slow to forgive betrayal and sometimes disguises resentment beneath jokes that cut deeper than intended.
Quirks
Background
Kabuklubağ was raised along a warm coast where tortle families traded stories as readily as fish and salt. His shell was painted with blue spirals by his elders, each one representing a tide, a journey, or a lesson learned from the sea. He first discovered his gift for music while serving aboard the merchant vessel Laughing Gull, where his drumbeat helped sailors keep rhythm during storms and his songs kept arguments from becoming mutinies. Although he was never the strongest deckhand, his calm voice and sharp memory made him invaluable whenever the crew faced reefs, pirates, or unfamiliar waters.
