Appearance
Galen is a broad-shouldered human man with weather-browned skin, close-cropped dark hair, and a neatly trimmed beard threaded with early silver. He stands with the easy balance of someone accustomed to moving across a pitching deck or a battlefield, though he often takes up more space than he realizes. His coat is reinforced with leather panels, brass fasteners, and numerous hidden pockets. A soot-darkened apron hangs from his belt, and his gloves are permanently stained with oil, ash, and blue alchemical residue. His eyes are alert and habitually measure every hinge, weapon, and exit in the room.
Mannerisms
Galen taps metal surfaces twice before trusting them, mutters measurements under his breath, and turns any conversation into a discussion of how something was constructed. When annoyed, he begins tightening random straps and buckles on his equipment.
Personality
Galen is practical, irreverent, and intensely curious. He dislikes grand speeches but remembers every useful detail about a person's equipment, habits, and weaknesses. He is protective of common soldiers and laborers, suspicious of polished commanders, and happiest when surrounded by broken machinery that he is allowed to rebuild in his own way.
Ideals
Freedom. A person should be judged by what they build and what they do, not by the uniform, family, or institution that claims them.
Bonds
He still carries the brass insignia of his old company and intends to recover its abandoned field workshop, wherever its surviving plans and prototypes were taken.
Flaws
Galen treats caution as a form of cowardice when other people are watching. He is quick to improvise, quick to take risks, and slow to admit that a plan has failed. He also has little patience for ceremonial authority, especially from officers who have never repaired anything under fire.

Background
Galen was born in a crowded human quarter beside a military foundry, where the rhythm of hammer blows served as the neighborhood clock. He enlisted young, less from patriotism than from a fascination with the army's machines, siege engines, signal lamps, and field repairs. He became a quartermaster's assistant, then a battlefield engineer, learning that wars were often decided by a missing wheel pin, a badly packed powder keg, or a messenger who arrived ten minutes late. Galen earned his rank by keeping soldiers alive with improvised tools and by refusing to waste equipment simply because officers had written it off as lost.
