Appearance
A slight, bright-eyed gnome with copper skin, a tidy shock of silver-streaked auburn hair, and half-moon spectacles balanced on a button nose. He dresses in a well-kept green leather jerkin over traveling clothes, with a lute slung across his back and pockets full of chalk, ribbon, and tiny note cards. His smile arrives before his words, and his fingers are rarely still, always tapping a rhythm on a sleeve, a mug, or the neck of his instrument.
Mannerisms
He speaks in measured, musical phrases, often quoting proverbs as if they were stage lines. When thinking, he polishes the same tuning peg over and over, and when nervous he hums the last note of whatever tune he last heard. He bows even when nobody is watching.
Personality
Cheerful, meticulous, and slyly observant, Pipnick treats every conversation like a duet. He is warm to friends, relentlessly curious with strangers, and surprisingly stern when someone wastes a good story or abuses the weak. He loves applause, but he values a useful truth even more.
Ideals
Knowledge should be shared, stories should be preserved, and the right words can spare more lives than any sword.
Bonds
He keeps a leather-bound songbook that belonged to his grandmother, and he will risk almost anything to recover a missing page said to contain the last verse of her greatest ballad.
Flaws
He cannot resist turning a serious moment into a performance, even when silence would be wiser. He keeps collecting secrets long after they stop being useful, because part of him believes every scrap of information can become a song, and every song can become leverage. When someone dismisses him as a harmless little showman, he smiles too quickly and then works twice as hard to prove them wrong.
Quirks
Background
Pipnick Underbough was born in a hill-gnome burrow where every invention, prank, and family argument became a song before the day was done. While other children learned to tinker with clockwork birds and clever locks, Pipnick learned the older craft of the room, how to turn a tense silence into laughter, how to make a stranger lean closer, and how to coax a sad story into a hopeful chorus. He was never the loudest voice, but he became the one people listened to when the hearth fire burned low. His first audience was the burrow elders, and his first standing ovation was a spoon clattering against a stew pot in time with his finale. As he grew, Pipnick wandered outward with a traveling troupe, carrying songs, gossip, and a scrapbook of half-remembered lore. He became obsessed with collecting forgotten verses, courtly scandals, and half-buried magical formulas, not just for applause, but because he believes every true story is a key. That curiosity led him to old libraries, roadside shrines, and dangerous ruins, where his quick wit and nimble hands proved more useful than brute strength ever could. Now he travels as a bard of the College of Lore, part performer, part archivist, part emergency plan when the singing stops and the arrows start flying.
