Appearance
Ilyana Vezara has warm umber skin, swept-back black horns polished to a soft sheen, and a long tail usually looped loosely around one boot. She wears a faded plum stage coat with careful, mismatched repairs at the cuffs; its brass buttons are scrubbed brighter than the rest of the garment. Her lute is immaculate. When waiting, she rests her weight on her left heel and keeps her hands folded as if listening for a musical cue.
Mannerisms
She taps a quiet four-beat rhythm against her thumb when listening, then waits a breath before answering. When someone is nervous, she angles her body toward them and lowers her voice rather than trying to command the room.
Personality
Warm, observant, and quietly organized, Ilyana enjoys making a room feel welcome. She listens closely before speaking, and uses humor to ease tension rather than to win an argument. She is generous with her time, but expects people to honor their word.
Ideals
Fairness. Rules should protect people who have less power, and a promise is worth keeping even when breaking it would be easier.
Bonds
She sends most of her earnings to her mother and keeps a place in the troupe for any performer who has been turned away unfairly. She still carries the first song her mother taught her, written in the lute case in her own hand.
Flaws
She can turn a fair compromise into a rigid rule, especially when someone powerful is involved. She also finds it difficult to leave a dispute unresolved, even when stepping in puts others at risk.
Quirks
Background
Ilyana grew up in a crowded river district where her infernal heritage made strangers decide what she was before she spoke. She learned to answer that judgment with a song, then stayed after the applause to help settle arguments, carry messages, and make sure the smallest children got home safely. Her mother taught her old ballads on a battered lute, while a patient stage manager, Tavi, showed her that an audience trusts a performer who remembers every name and pays every promised fee. For years Ilyana toured with a small company called the Reed-Menders, named for the reed-pipe makers whose workshops once lined their home street. When the company’s patron vanished with the troupe’s wages, Ilyana organized the performers, found honest work, and saw that everyone was paid before she took her own share. She now travels alone, offering music and practical help wherever she goes. She believes a good performance can open a door, but she is learning that doing the right thing sometimes means refusing the room its favorite story.
