Appearance
Riola Fiala is a tall, powerfully built tiefling with swept-back obsidian horns, deep crimson skin, and a long tail that curls around the leg of his chair when he is thinking. Within a minute of meeting him, people notice that his eyes rarely settle on faces. He studies doorways, hands, ceiling beams, and the empty space behind a speaker, as though every room contains a second conversation. His black coat is slightly too large at the shoulders and carefully repaired at the cuffs with silver thread. He wears a white acolyte's stole beneath it, immaculate except for tiny handwritten notes in the margins. His iron holy symbol has been polished smooth from constant handling.
Mannerisms
Riola pauses before answering simple questions, as though checking the wording for hidden obligations. He writes a tiny legalistic note beside every important name. During negotiations, he slowly rotates his holy symbol between two fingers, and when he lies, his tail goes perfectly still.
Personality
Riola is observant, irreverent, and unnervingly polite. He enjoys theological arguments more than victories, especially when he can make a priest, devil, or scholar admit that their certainty depends on an unstated assumption. He is compassionate toward people trapped by institutions, contracts, or inherited shame, but impatient with anyone who uses tradition as an excuse for cruelty. He prefers clever bargains to open threats, though he is perfectly capable of both.
Ideals
Knowledge is freedom. No god, devil, ancestor, or institution has the right to keep a person ignorant for their own protection. Every binding promise should contain a path to choice.
Bonds
Sister Vael disappeared while protecting a prophecy that Riola believes concerns the fate of several planes. He will bargain with almost anyone to recover her, but he refuses to let the Ashen Regent claim her soul.
Flaws
Riola treats trust as a temporary legal arrangement. He is too willing to exploit loopholes, even when a straightforward act of kindness would serve better. When frightened, he becomes glib and precise, arguing semantics while ignoring the emotional damage he is causing. Deep down, he fears that the Ashen Regent did not deceive him at all, and that Riola accepted the pact because some part of him wanted permission to stop being good.
Quirks
Background
Riola was born beneath the bells of a small temple whose priests believed that devotion was measured by service rather than obedience. As an acolyte, he copied prayers, tended votive lamps, and learned to read the pauses between spoken words. His infernal heritage made some pilgrims distrust him, but the temple archivist, Sister Vael, treated his horns as no more ominous than a scholar's spectacles. She taught him that every god leaves fingerprints on the world, and that those fingerprints can be followed through scripture, ritual, and patient observation. Riola's pact began when a forbidden prayer answered from the wrong side of the veil. The voice called itself the Ashen Regent, a fiend who offered knowledge of the hidden clauses binding mortals, celestials, and devils alike. Riola accepted, not out of worship, but because the Regent knew what had happened to Sister Vael after she vanished while investigating a prophecy erased from the temple records. Now Riola travels as a scholar, negotiator, and occasional saboteur, seeking the truth behind that disappearance. He still performs the old rites, though he has stopped pretending that holiness and damnation are always opposites. To him, both are systems of power, and every system has a loophole.
