Appearance
A lean tiefling woman with deep wine-red skin, swept-back black horns, pale gold eyes, and long dark hair threaded with copper charms. Her tail is thin and expressive, usually curled around one ankle when she is thinking. She wears a weathered leather coat over simple hermit's garments, with a blackened iron amulet bearing the sigil of her fiendish patron hidden beneath her collar. Her hands are stained with herb sap and ink, and faint ember-like marks glow along her wrists whenever she invokes magic.
Mannerisms
She pauses to identify unfamiliar scents before entering a room, taps her thumb against the black stone focus when thinking, and speaks to her familiar as if it were a respected colleague. When irritated, she adjusts the copper charms in her hair one by one.
Personality
Quiet, observant, and relentlessly curious, Veyra treats every conversation like a field study. She is compassionate toward the sick, the frightened, and anyone treated as monstrous by society. Although socially awkward after years alone, she has a dry sense of humor and an unexpectedly fierce protectiveness once someone earns her trust.
Ideals
Knowledge should belong to those who use it to protect the helpless, not to those who hoard it for power. If the only cure lies in forbidden lore, then forbidden lore must be faced rather than feared.
Bonds
She will do anything to prevent the infernal sickness from reaching the village where her brother died. She also carries the last surviving page of her hermit's research, believing it contains the key to breaking her pact without unleashing her patron.
Flaws
She is suspicious of kindness, convinced that every generous offer hides a price. When frightened, she becomes secretive and may withhold crucial information even from trusted allies. She also believes she can outsmart her patron, a confidence that may prove catastrophically wrong.

Background
For most of her adult life, Veyra Ashroot lived alone in a ruined shrine deep within the Briarwild. She entered the wilderness seeking a cure for a wasting sickness that had taken her younger brother, carrying only a herbalist's kit, a few books, and the stubborn conviction that every poison had an antidote. Years of solitude taught her the language of birds, the patience of stone, and the dangerous habit of asking questions no mortal scholar had dared to write down. In the shrine's sealed crypt, Veyra found a black mirror and heard a voice promising knowledge enough to save a dying world. The voice belonged to a fiend, though it never gave its true name. Veyra accepted a pact, not for wealth or power, but for a single answer. She learned that the sickness was not natural. It was the first symptom of an ancient infernal bargain being renewed beneath the region's oldest forest. The pact gave her eldritch power, but also made her a target for the cult that serves the bargain. Veyra now travels beyond her hermitage to gather allies, destroy the cult's agents, and find a way to use hell's own fire without becoming its servant.
