Appearance
Bites-his-tongue is a lean, powerfully built lizardfolk with dark olive scales dulled by years of dust, rain, and campaign roads. His long jaw is held unusually still, as if every word must pass inspection before it is released. He keeps his yellow eyes moving constantly, counting exits, watching hands, and studying the posture of everyone in the room. A faded strip of red cloth is tied around one wrist, a remnant of his clan's military colors. He carries himself with disciplined economy, wastes no motion, and favors a simple spear held close to the body rather than flourished dramatically.
Mannerisms
He pauses before answering, tilts his head slightly, and studies the speaker's hands rather than their face. When thinking, he presses the tip of his tongue against one side of his jaw. Before entering a room, he quietly touches the doorframe and looks upward, checking for traps, rafters, and ambush positions.
Personality
Quiet, observant, and intensely deliberate. He is more comfortable demonstrating an answer than explaining it, and he respects people who adapt under pressure. Though he appears cold, he notices small discomforts in others and responds with practical assistance. He dislikes being treated as a curiosity and becomes unexpectedly stubborn when someone insists that tradition is more important than survival.
Ideals
Discipline. The right action is not always the traditional action. A warrior's duty is to protect life and accomplish the mission, not to satisfy the pride of those giving orders.
Bonds
He carries the red wrist-cloth of his old unit and intends to find the surviving families of the soldiers who died under his former command. He will not allow their sacrifice to be remembered as a simple military failure.
Flaws
He assumes that anyone who praises his unusual methods is either mocking him or preparing to exploit him. He also has difficulty retreating from a fight when someone else is being left behind, even when staying would be tactically foolish.
Quirks
Background
Bites-his-tongue was raised among a lizardfolk clan that treated warfare as a sacred conversation between hunter, terrain, and prey. He entered the clan's war band young and quickly became known for his patience, his ability to move through marshland without disturbing the reeds, and his refusal to waste strength. His officers, however, considered his methods improper. He watched before striking, used open hands and leverage instead of the clan's favored heavy weapons, and often broke formation to protect wounded soldiers or draw enemies onto unstable ground. To them, this was hesitation. To him, it was fighting intelligently. The name Bites-his-tongue began as an insult after he challenged a commander who dismissed him for being different. Rather than answer with anger, he literally clamped his jaws shut and accepted punishment. Years later, after surviving a disastrous campaign that killed much of his unit, he left the clan with the name still attached to him. On the road he found teachers who recognized what his former commanders had missed. Their discipline gave shape to his instincts, turning his watchfulness, balance, and controlled violence into the beginnings of a monastic practice. He now travels as a soldier without an army, determined to prove that there is more than one honorable way to fight.
