Appearance
A compact, long-limbed harengon with tawny russet fur, a cream-colored muzzle, and alert amber eyes. His ears are unusually broad and nicked at the tips from years of travel through thorn country. He wears plain ochre monk's robes under a weathered charcoal vest, with red cord wrapped around his wrists and ankles. A narrow satchel holds his disguise kit, forgery tools, and a few carefully chosen props. His movements are quick, balanced, and watchful, like a rabbit deciding whether the whole world is safe enough to cross.
Mannerisms
Brisq angles his ears toward whoever is speaking and unconsciously shifts his weight onto the balls of his feet. He taps two fingers against his wrist before making a promise, and he often pauses before answering simple questions, as though selecting which version of the truth will cause the least harm.
Personality
I can make almost anyone feel like an old friend within five minutes, though I rarely let anyone become one. I watch exits, count footsteps, and treat every conversation as a puzzle with a hidden answer. Beneath the practiced charm, I am earnest, protective, and deeply uncomfortable with the idea that someone might be abandoned because no one believed their story.
Ideals
Freedom. No one should be trapped by a name, a debt, or a story someone else wrote for them.
Bonds
I owe Sister Kivuli a debt I cannot repay until I uncover who funded the kidnapping ring that destroyed her monastery's trust in the outside world.
Flaws
When a straightforward answer would work, I am still tempted to improve it with a lie. I also run from emotional commitments nearly as quickly as I run from danger.
Quirks
Background
Brisq Mtembe was born in a caravan settlement where harengon traders, peddlers, pilgrims, and thieves all learned to read a road by its footprints. His mother sold dyed cloth, his uncle sold miracle tonics, and Brisq discovered early that a confident voice could make almost anything sound valuable. He became a charlatan not because he loved cheating people, but because he was fascinated by the space between what someone feared and what they were willing to believe. For a time, he traveled under a succession of names, selling counterfeit blessings and staged omens to wealthy travelers who wanted certainty more than truth. His luck changed when one of his schemes exposed a real kidnapping ring operating behind a traveling shrine. Brisq escaped with a group of children, but the ring's leader left him with a choice, disappear forever or learn how to survive without relying on lies. A wandering monk named Sister Kivuli found him hiding in a grain cart and taught him that speed was not the same as panic, and deception was not the same as wisdom. Brisq stayed long enough to learn the first disciplines of the open hand, then left to find the people who financed the kidnapping ring. He still carries his false identity, but now he uses it to reach places honest names cannot enter. He tells himself that every con is a step toward setting one more wrong right, though he knows that excuse can become another kind of lie.
