Appearance
Garrik Tegan is a broad-shouldered earth genasi with slate-gray skin, rough mineral ridges along his jaw and forearms, and dark eyes flecked with dull amber sparks. His black hair is cropped close, with a single pale quartz streak above his right temple. He wears battered chain mail beneath a weathered green surcoat, carries a heavy shield marked with old unit scars, and moves with the deliberate balance of someone accustomed to unstable ground.
Mannerisms
Garrik taps two fingers against his shield before entering danger. When considering a difficult decision, he presses his thumb into the mineral ridge beneath his left eye and stares at the nearest solid surface.
Personality
Garrik is patient, plainspoken, and intensely practical. He notices exits, weak walls, supply shortages, and who is standing too close to whom. He rarely raises his voice, because he learned that quiet orders carry farther in a battlefield panic. Beneath his restraint is a dry humor and a stubborn tenderness for frightened recruits, lost children, and anyone trying to look braver than they feel.
Ideals
Stability. The world is held together by people who stand their ground when everything else gives way.
Bonds
He carries the cracked badge of the first squad he commanded, and he will risk almost anything to protect soldiers abandoned by their commanders.
Flaws
He distrusts anyone who speaks too smoothly about sacrifice, and he can become cold, rigid, and needlessly confrontational when challenged by someone he considers undisciplined.
Quirks
Background
Garrik Tegan was born in a quarry settlement where the earth genasi families worked the deep seams beneath the hills. His mother said the stone listened when he was angry. His father said stone listened to everyone, and that the wise learned to speak carefully. Garrik learned neither lesson quickly. As a young man, he joined the border legions after a landslide destroyed half the settlement and exposed an ancient passage beneath it. The army offered food, discipline, and a way to keep dangerous relic hunters away from his people. Garrik became a shield soldier, then a squad leader, earning his reputation by holding ground that should have been lost.
“His mother said the stone listened when he was angry.”
