Appearance
Grunhilde is a broad-shouldered mountain dwarf with a powerful, compact build and iron-gray hair braided with small brass bounty tokens. She wears practical half-plate beneath a weather-stained hunter's coat, and keeps her shield close even when resting. Within a minute of meeting her, people notice that she rarely looks directly at whoever is speaking. Instead, her attention moves constantly across doors, windows, rooftops, hands, and nearby escape routes. When standing still, she rests most of her weight on the balls of her feet, as though waiting for a quarry to bolt. Her beard is carefully trimmed into two square braids, and her expression is usually one of intense professional interest rather than anger.
Mannerisms
She silently counts exits, windows, and armed individuals whenever she enters a room. When considering a lie, she rubs the brass bounty token braided into her beard. She addresses strangers by profession before learning their names, such as 'innkeeper,' 'guard,' or 'quarry.'
Personality
Grunhilde is alert, blunt, and professionally courteous. She treats every conversation as a negotiation for information, but she has a surprisingly warm respect for people who admit fear or uncertainty. She enjoys crowded taverns because they provide useful noise and dislikes quiet rooms because quiet rooms usually mean someone is listening.
Ideals
No one should be above consequence. Law is useful when it protects people, but when it becomes a shield for the powerful, breaking it can be the more honest choice.
Bonds
The Bounty Hunters Guild of Askia gave her purpose, and she will protect its honest members even when doing so is dangerous. She also carries a brass token from the miners she helped rescue, and she refuses to let powerful people turn ordinary workers into disposable evidence.
Flaws
She assumes every official process is hiding a private deal, and she is often right just often enough to make the habit dangerous. Grunhilde cannot resist pursuing a dishonest bounty hunter, even when another contract is more urgent. She also has a talent for making allies feel interrogated when she is merely trying to understand them.
Quirks
Background
Grunhilde was raised in a mountain settlement where every family knew how to mine, mend, brew, or fight. Her earliest lessons in heroism came during a winter collapse, when she helped organize miners and shepherds into a rescue crew after a wealthy prospecting company abandoned the trapped workers. Grunhilde became known not because she was the strongest person underground, though she often was, but because she could look at a chaotic scene and immediately identify who was missing, who was lying, and which tunnel was about to fail. That reputation brought her to the Bounty Hunters Guild of Askia, where she learned that the most dangerous quarry was often another bounty hunter. She now works as a bounty hunter of bounty hunters, tracking guild members who take contracts dishonestly, sell captives to criminals, or disappear with rewards owed to others. Her methods are direct, flexible, and only loosely concerned with official procedure. She has become a wandering folk hero to debtors, caravaners, and small villages that cannot afford formal justice, while established authorities describe her as an armed complication. Grunhilde considers both descriptions fair.
“That reputation brought her to the Bounty Hunters Guild of Askia, where she learned that the most dangerous quarry was often another bounty hunter.”
