Appearance
Jeane is a broad-shouldered aasimar man with warm brown skin, close-cropped black hair, and faintly luminous silver irises. His plain temple robe is carefully mended at the cuffs with mismatched blue thread, while his chain shirt fits slightly too large beneath it. He keeps his holy symbol polished to an almost absurd degree. Before speaking, he takes a quiet breath through his nose and briefly presses his lips together, as though arranging his thoughts in a formal prayer.
Mannerisms
Jeane pauses before answering difficult questions, inhales softly through his nose, and then speaks in the measured cadence of a liturgical reading. He cleans his holy symbol whenever he is anxious, straightens crooked objects without noticing, and counts doorways under his breath when entering an unfamiliar building.
Personality
Jeane is patient, observant, and practical. He listens carefully to people whose beliefs differ from his own, but he has little patience for religious vanity or anyone who uses suffering as proof of moral superiority. He prefers useful kindness to grand speeches, and he remembers small details about strangers, such as their preferred tea or which hand they favor when carrying a burden.
Ideals
Service. A prayer has value only when it changes what someone is willing to do for another person.
Bonds
The roadside shrine where Jeane was raised is threatened by creditors and political pressure. He will protect its people and preserve its records, even if doing so means opposing a powerful temple.
Flaws
Jeane mistakes emotional restraint for wisdom. He can become frustratingly neutral when someone needs immediate reassurance, and he is secretly terrified that his miracles are accidents rather than proof of any divine purpose.
Quirks
Background
Jeane Benedict was raised in a small roadside shrine where travelers left offerings to whatever power might be listening. The shrine had no grand doctrine, only a strict schedule of candles, clean water, burial prayers, and meals for the hungry. As an aasimar child, Jeane was treated as an omen by some worshipers and as a convenient answer to their prayers by others. His mentor, an elderly priest named Mother Caldra, taught him to distrust both reactions. Divinity, she insisted, was not a crown. It was a responsibility to be useful when no one else was. Jeane served for years as a copyist, caretaker, and quiet counselor before divine power began answering his prayers directly. His first miracle was not dramatic. A fever broke in a stranger he had been tending, and the shrine's cracked bell rang once despite having no clapper. Since then, Jeane has taken up the mace and shield not from zeal but from practicality. The road contains people who need protection, disputes that cannot be settled by scripture alone, and mysteries that no honest priest should pretend to understand. He now travels to learn whether the gods truly guide mortal lives, or whether mortals simply become better at hearing what they already believe.
