Appearance
A lean, long-limbed male kenku with soot-black feathers, a narrow hooked beak, and pale amber eyes that rarely blink. Several silver-gray feathers interrupt the dark plumage around his throat and shoulders. He wears weather-stained scale mail beneath a moss-green cloak, with a longbow wrapped in oiled leather and a pair of worn shortswords at his hips. His hands are stained with charcoal and bowstring wax, and a strip of red cloth is tied around one ankle.
Mannerisms
Mavunai rarely speaks in his own natural voice. He answers in stolen tones, repeating a person's words in the voice of someone they trust or fear. When thinking, he taps two claws against his bow grip in a steady rhythm. He angles his head sharply when listening and watches mouths rather than eyes.
Personality
Quiet, observant, and unsettlingly patient, Mavunai studies people as if they were trails. He prefers leverage to violence, but he is an efficient and unsentimental killer when violence becomes necessary. He has a dry sense of humor expressed through perfectly timed imitations of other people's voices.
Ideals
Predation. The world belongs to those clever enough to claim it. Mercy is merely a tool, useful when it creates debt, loyalty, or fear.
Bonds
He possesses a knotted red cord taken from the wrist of the only person who once treated him as a trusted companion. He will ruin anyone who threatens the scattered kenku flock that sheltered him, though he would rather manipulate an enemy into destroying itself than fight openly.
Flaws
He assumes every kindness conceals a price, and he is often right enough to become unbearable. He hoards useful information, lies reflexively when questioned, and would sacrifice an innocent stranger without hesitation if doing so preserved his own advantage or protected his flock.
Quirks
Background
Mavunai was hatched in the rafters of a ruined watchtower, where his clutch learned to survive by listening. The tower stood above a forest road used by smugglers, pilgrims, and soldiers, and the young kenku became skilled at recognizing travelers by their footsteps, voices, and habitual lies. When a winter famine drove his flock from the highlands, Mavunai guided them through snowbound ravines and abandoned logging trails. He learned the routes from old camp scraps, broken trail markers, and the last words of people who did not survive the journey. The flock reached safety, but Mavunai kept the knowledge of the roads for himself.
