Appearance
Finnian is a three-foot-six-inch gnome with wind-tangled chestnut hair, bright gray-green eyes, and a neatly trimmed copper beard braided with tiny bits of blue thread from his old military uniform. His face is weathered despite his youthful species, marked by a pale scar across one eyebrow and a constellation of freckles from years beneath open skies. He wears practical studded leather beneath a forest-green cloak, carries a longbow nearly as tall as he is, and keeps a polished brass gaming die hanging from his belt.
Mannerisms
Finnian unconsciously counts footsteps, arrows, and exits. When thinking, he taps his brass gaming die against his knuckles in a steady military rhythm. He salutes animals before speaking with them and refers to every dangerous plan as a perfectly reasonable bit of walking.
Personality
Finnian is upbeat, observant, and unfailingly polite, even while stalking a dangerous quarry. He treats every camp as a temporary home and every frightened traveler as a person under his protection. His humor is dry and oddly formal, shaped by military discipline and gnome ingenuity. Beneath the jokes is a vigilant survivor who notices every missing boot, broken twig, and nervous glance.
Ideals
Protection. Strength exists to shield those who have none. A victory that leaves helpless people behind is only another kind of defeat.
Bonds
He carries Sergeant Branna Vale's brass gaming die and will risk almost anything to discover what happened to the soldiers and civilians lost at Red Willow Ford.
Flaws
Finnian cannot accept an order that abandons civilians, even when obeying would clearly be safer or strategically wiser. He also hides grief behind jokes, and his insistence that he can handle everything alone sometimes prevents allies from helping before danger becomes unavoidable.
Quirks
Background
Finnian Lightfoot was raised in a gnome burrow hidden beneath the roots of an ancient oak. His family repaired traps, clocks, and field instruments for passing patrols, and Finnian learned early that a small hand could accomplish large things with patience and leverage. When raiders burned several woodland settlements, Finnian enlisted despite his family's protests. He served as a scout, messenger, and bowman, slipping through thorn country to chart enemy movements and guide larger soldiers through terrain where a human boot would have betrayed them. His military career ended at the Battle of Red Willow Ford, where Finnian's unit was ordered to hold a bridge long enough for civilians to escape. He survived by leading the enemy commander into a maze of flooded alder roots, but his closest friend, Sergeant Branna Vale, never returned from the retreat. Finnian still carries Branna's brass gaming die as a reminder that every battle is measured in lives, not victories. Now he serves as a wandering ranger, hunting the monsters and warlords who prey upon isolated communities. He is cheerful around campfires, exacting on patrol, and utterly unwilling to leave anyone behind if there is even the smallest chance of bringing them home.
