Appearance
Borin Sabo is a broad, weathered hill dwarf with a compact, powerful build and a beard kept short enough for work, though its lower half is usually threaded with bits of grass, burrs, or dried leaves. His skin is ruddy and windworn, his dark hair is clipped close around the ears, and his hazel eyes have the patient, measuring look of someone accustomed to watching animals before deciding what they will do. He wears well-maintained leather armor under a moss-green wool mantle, with a wooden shield marked by a simple painted wheat stalk. Before speaking, he draws a slow breath through his nose and clears his throat once, as though making room for the right words.
Mannerisms
Before answering a difficult question, Borin inhales through his nose, clears his throat once, and looks toward the nearest living plant. He trims loose beard hairs with a small knife while thinking, and he speaks more gently to animals than to most people.
Personality
Borin is steady, observant, and practical. He prefers useful work to ceremony, honest silence to empty conversation, and a repaired fence to a stirring speech. He is gentle with frightened creatures and surprisingly patient with children, but he becomes stern when people waste food, water, or another person's labor.
Ideals
Stewardship. The strong are not owners of the world. They are temporary caretakers responsible for leaving soil, water, and community healthier than they found them.
Bonds
The hill settlement of Sabo's Rise entrusted Borin with its oldest seed-stores, and he will risk himself to protect its people, fields, and water. He also owes his first druidic teacher a final promise, to restore a damaged stretch of woodland before the old priest dies.
Flaws
Borin is slow to forgive anyone who damages land or animals, and his judgment becomes blunt and inflexible when he believes someone is acting from greed. He also has a habit of assuming that quiet observation makes him wiser than everyone else in the room.
Quirks
Background
Borin Sabo was raised in a hill-dwarf farming settlement where stone walls divided the fields from the old forest. His family worked orchards and kept goats, but Borin was always more interested in what grew beyond the boundary stones. His first lessons in druidic practice came from an elderly hedge-priest who taught him that roots, rivers, animals, and people all belonged to the same patient conversation. Borin learned to read weather in the shape of clouds, sickness in the color of leaves, and dishonesty in the way a person avoided looking at a frightened animal. When a mining company began cutting into the hills, poisoned runoff entered the settlement stream and sickened livestock and children. Borin organized the farmers, miners, and charcoal burners into a common defense, then led them through the forest to expose the illegal workings. He did not kill the mine overseer, though he left the man bound beneath a sign reading, "Ask the water what it remembers." Since then, the villagers have treated Borin as a folk hero, but he considers the title embarrassing. He now travels to learn who else is being harmed by careless hunger, carrying the memory of his home in the scent of wet soil after rain.
