Appearance
Mara Ellison is a compact, plainly dressed human woman with a practical build and a face that becomes difficult to read when she is concentrating. She wears a faded olive overshirt over a charcoal T-shirt, durable trousers, and clean trainers suited to running errands or crossing a city on foot. Her dark brown hair is cut just below the ears and is usually tucked behind them while she works. Within a minute of meeting her, people notice that she occupies less space than expected, standing at the edge of a room rather than in its center, and that she repeatedly checks the clasp of a small canvas medical pouch at her hip without seeming aware of it. Her hands are steady, her movements economical, and her attention rarely rests where everyone else thinks it should.
Mannerisms
Mara stands near exits, checks the clasp of her medical pouch when thinking, and answers emotional questions with a practical observation. She rarely interrupts. When she does, it is usually to hand someone the object they were about to ask for.
Personality
Mara is restrained, observant, and nearly impossible to rush. She is not cold, but she often expresses care through completed tasks rather than reassurance. Her humor is dry and arrives without warning. She dislikes grand promises, emotional theater, and people who mistake activity for progress. She is most comfortable beside someone doing necessary work in silence, and least comfortable when asked to describe what she wants before she has already started making it possible.
Ideals
Health is the first freedom. A person cannot choose their life while their body, home, or mind is being quietly cornered.
Bonds
The Open Canopy sheltered my family during the blackout that changed my life. I will protect its people, even when they are too proud or frightened to ask.
Flaws
I assume that explaining myself is less important than solving the problem, even when the explanation is what someone actually needs. When I feel exposed, I disappear and call it giving people space.
Quirks
Background
Mara Ellison grew up above a small neighborhood clinic where her mother worked reception and her father repaired mobility equipment. She learned early that most emergencies were not dramatic. They were a missed dose, a locked door, a pan left on a burner, a person too embarrassed to say they needed help. Mara became good at seeing the actual problem beneath the argument around it. By seventeen, she could quietly reorganize a waiting room, find a lost patient, and get someone home before the adults finished deciding whose responsibility it was. The Odonata House found her after a winter power failure left half the district without heat. While officials debated access and liability, Mara moved through the dark buildings, identified the people at real risk, borrowed a delivery van, and brought them to the Open Canopy. She did not make a speech afterward. She only returned the keys and replaced the van's missing tire pressure cap. The House gave her the title of the Ghost, not because she was invisible, but because she had already understood the work's central discipline. Observe everything, reveal nothing. Since then, Mara has become the person sent into crowded problems, fractured households, and quiet institutional failures. She fixes what can be fixed, leaves before gratitude becomes a conversation, and is still learning that a solution can hurt when the person receiving it was never asked what they wanted.
