Appearance
Poppy is a sturdy, weather-browned human woman of average height, with broad working hands, a strong back, and dark brown hair usually tied in a practical braid. Her eyes are hazel with flecks of green, and a pale scar crosses one eyebrow from a childhood accident with a runaway mule. She wears well-maintained chain mail beneath a green and ochre tabard bearing Arawai's sheaf-and-sun emblem. Bits of dried lavender, wheat, and mountain grass are often tucked into her braid or belt.
Mannerisms
Poppy rubs her thumb across the face of her holy symbol whenever she is thinking. She tends to explain spiritual matters using farming metaphors, often without noticing. When nervous, she counts quietly under her breath in groups of three, the rhythm she once used while sowing seed.
Personality
Poppy is practical, earnest, and unexpectedly funny when she forgets to be reverent. She listens carefully to frightened people, remembers the names of animals, and distrusts anyone who speaks of destiny as though it excuses cruelty. She is brave when someone else needs help, but awkward when asked to speak about her own worth.
Ideals
Life is stubborn, communal, and worth protecting. The work of saving one seed, one lamb, or one frightened person is holy whether anyone sings about it or not.
Bonds
Lily is my sister, not my rival. I will discover what Arawai intended for both of us, even if the answer wounds us.
Flaws
I mistake uncertainty for failure and become defensive whenever someone suggests I do not belong in the priesthood.
Quirks
Background
Poppy Willowbrook was raised where the mountain foothills softened into terraces of barley, beans, and stubborn little orchards. She was the second daughter in a family that measured a year by planting, lambing, and the first frost. Her elder sister Lily was different from the beginning. Local priests of Arawai said Lily carried a holy mark, so Lily was taught prayers, seasons, and sacred rites while Poppy learned to mend fences, judge weather by the smell of the wind, and coax life from poor soil. Poppy expected to remain on the farm with her brothers, grumbling affectionately about blisters and broken plows.
