The Gilded Lanterns
After the founding exposé that toppled a tax farmer, the Lanterns evolved from a local relief network into a structured secret society. Over decades they established cells in three river towns and two market cities. They developed tradecraft: clandestine printing, forgery methods, and a coded lantern signal system for safe houses. A bitter split occurred thirty-one years ago when some members advocated for placing compromised officials into office through coercion; these members formed the Compelling Light faction within the Lanterns. That internal schism led to a public scandal in which a coerced magistrate retaliated and arrested several Lanterns. The society was nearly dismantled but survived by going deeper underground and refining consensual-use rules and oversight. In the last ten years, the Lanterns have focused on training to avoid unnecessary escalation and on recruiting artisans and sympathetic minor nobles. Their influence now spans multiple settlements along the river and reaches into surrounding market roads, making them a significant regional power in civic politics and popular opinion.
