The Prism Wardens

For its first three decades, the Wardens were a loose volunteer association known as Samira's Road Circle. They guarded caravans in exchange for supplies and relied on reputation rather than law. Their first major triumph came during the Ashen Crossing, when they led nine hundred refugees through a region where fire elementals had made the roads spontaneously combust. The Wardens developed their colored hazard lantern system during this event. Their first great setback came when a rival caravan house hired mercenaries to impersonate Wardens and extort travelers. The scandal nearly destroyed public trust. The organization responded by accepting a formal charter from the Glass Spires and establishing standardized badges, patrol ledgers, and licensed wayhouses. The watershed moment was the Saltglass Crisis 83 years ago. A Glass Spire extraction project beneath the eastern road ruptured an underground elemental reservoir, turning wells into poisonous crystal and trapping an entire trade column in a valley of rising glass. The Wardens disobeyed orders to protect the extraction site and instead evacuated civilians. They later exposed that the project had been approved despite warnings from independent surveyors. The Spires survived the scandal by granting the Wardens investigative authority over road-threatening extraction, but the concession created a permanent tension between patronage and oversight. During the War of Shattered Rain, the Wardens became indispensable neutral escorts, protecting medical caravans and negotiating passage through contested territory. In recent years, their influence has grown with the expansion of licensed wayhouses, but so has their workload. Illegal planar extraction is spreading, elemental hazards are becoming less predictable, and many Wardens suspect the legal system is being used to conceal the worst offenders.

Caravan militia and hazardous-route authority · Lawful with strong protectionist and reformist currents. The Prism Wardens value public safety, but their methods range from compassionate service to intrusive surveillance and coercive regulation.

Founder’s Story

The Prism Wardens began when a caravan leader named Samira Vey led 47 wagons through the first Great Refraction, a storm that transformed sand, rain, and lightning into shifting sheets of living glass. The official road guards abandoned the route, but Samira organized drivers, guards, healers, and porters into rotating rescue teams. They marked safe passages with colored lanterns and used mirrored shields to redirect destructive beams. By the time the storm ended, they had rescued hundreds of stranded travelers and established the first permanent watch at a ruined wayhouse. When the Glass Spires later offered funding and legal authority, Samira accepted on one condition: the Wardens would retain the right to investigate any elemental disturbance affecting a public road, even if the disturbance originated from a Spire-controlled operation.

The Mechanism of Intent

Public Goals
  • Keep major roads open and safe.
  • Protect travelers from bandits, monsters, disasters, and elemental hazards.
  • Ensure that licensed extraction follows safety regulations.
  • Provide impartial emergency aid to anyone traveling under Warden protection.
  • Prevent dangerous artifacts and unstable materials from reaching civilian markets.
  • Secret Goals
  • Secure an independent charter before the Glass Spires can dissolve or absorb the organization.
  • Expose the officials who authorized the Saltglass extraction project, regardless of the political consequences.
  • Create a protected network of civilian wayhouses outside direct Glass Spire control.
  • Develop a method of repairing damaged elemental reservoirs rather than merely regulating their extraction.
  • Prepare evacuation routes in case the Glass Spires attempt to weaponize the planar wells beneath Al-Zahir.
  • Current Objectives
  • Protect the Grand Meridian roads during the upcoming migration season.
  • Identify which licensed wayhouses are secretly supplying illegal planar extraction operations.
  • Prevent a chain reaction of unstable elemental vents beneath the western caravan route.
  • Rebuild trust with independent caravaneers without surrendering inspection authority.
  • Recover the missing Prism Ledger, an archive of extraction permits that may reveal a conspiracy within the Glass Spires.
  • Long-Term Vision

A self-governing network of safe roads where elemental forces are regulated by public councils rather than private extraction licenses, with the Wardens serving as neutral protectors accountable to travelers, settlements, and wayhouse communities.

StructureChartered road militia with civic, investigative, and emergency regulatory functions
SuccessionThe First Prism is selected by a vote of the Prism Council, but the council must first hear testimony from Route Captains, wayhouse keepers, and representatives of independent caravan houses. A candidate must complete the Night Road, a ceremonial journey through three hazardous routes without an official escort. If the council cannot agree, authority passes temporarily to the senior Route Captain, a process that could elevate Oren Pell and trigger a political crisis.
