That event birthed the Order's policy that they would act as neutral caregivers in conflict, which both increased their influence and exposed them to political entanglements. One hundred fifty years ago a schism splintered the Order between the Conservators, who emphasized ritual purity and controlled growth, and the Open-Handers, who pushed aggressive outreach and secular partnerships. Reunification occurred, but the schism's cultural fault lines are still visible. In the modern era the Order stands as a continental network with branches in coastal empires, highland principalities, and merchant republics. Their sundering of a dangerous necrotizing plague three decades ago solidified their status as indispensable, but also created resentment from medical guilds that lost influence.
