Cult of the White Sovereign
Age of Dragons: 2,000 years ago the continent was ruled by dragon overlords. A mortal hero rose who united human clans and felled several dragons. After a final battle he did not step down. He wove necromancy, crowned himself, and declared a new order. His lieutenants allied to stop his tyranny. They bound him in ice and erased his metamorphosis from public memory. For centuries the truth was fragmentary whispers hidden in monasteries and academic cloisters. The original binders formed an oath-bound order to guard the site. Over the next millennium the order split. One branch became guardians who kept the ice-seal intact and convinced rulers to maintain the lie. Another branch sought to communicate with the trapped king and slowly became devotees. In the late First Century of the modern era the devotees discovered ways to send mental messages through dreams and built a penitential network of merchants and oracles to cloak recruitment. They survived purges, persecutions, and near-exposure wars by leveraging trade and bureaucratic sway. Two hundred years ago a catastrophic breach by rival treasure hunters nearly freed the king but the Council of Three Frosts restored the seal. That watershed moment radicalized the cult; they shifted from covert guardianship to active worship and political conquest by influence. Since then the cult expanded across nations, embedding into courts and churches and growing a continental web of whispered influence.
