The Meridian Custodial Circle

Phase 1 - Founding and Codification 312 to 210 years ago: The early Circle operated openly as civic engineers, supplying weather wards, census orderings, and record stabilization. Phase 2 - Expansion and Institutionalization 210 to 60 years ago: The Circle established guild charters and clandestine contracts with ruling houses and learned colleges. Phase 3 - The Shudder and the Great Schism 48 years ago: An experiment erupted into a city-wide perceptual fracture that briefly exposed the simulated grid. The resulting panic led to stronger secrecy laws and the purge of public investigators. Phase 4 - The Veil Era 48 years ago to present: The Circle imposed strict controls, professionalized memory-correction protocols, and built the Lower Vaults. Their role changed from civic service providers to architects of continuity and concealment.

Founder’s Story

The Circle began as a cabal of court arcanists and early industrial codifiers 312 years ago. Their founder, Archivist-Magus Leora Venn, discovered artifacts from an ancient ruined workshop under the city that had been left by an unknown engineer. Leora combined ritual theory with proto-mechanical logic and forged the first 'code-sigil' which allowed small, localized alterations to weather and record. Over generations the Circle evolved from bureaucratic consultants into something that blended arcane pacts, occult programming, and tight administrative procedures. Forty-eight years ago a watershed event known as the Shudder occurred when an experiment at the Lower Vaults briefly displayed a full-frame overlay that revealed the simulated grid beneath reality. That Shudder split the Circle into reformers, who wanted to expose the truth, and Custodians, who established the Simulation Veil and buried the revelation. The Custodians won and created the modern order that covers up the simulation and polices anomalies.

The Mechanism of Intent

Public Goals
  • Preserve civic stability and prevent panic
  • Protect the populace from dangerous magical anomalies
  • Provide archival services and scholarly study
  • Secret Goals
  • Stabilize the Simulation by installing permanent feedback loops that make the Veil self-healing even if the Circle collapses.
  • Create a controllable lineage of memory-clones to replace key figures if public disclosure forces sudden leadership change.
  • Harvest the cognitive patterns of dissidents to build a predictive model that anticipates and neutralizes uprisings before they begin.
  • Current Objectives
  • Maintain the Simulation Veil and prevent public awareness.
  • Secure and expand access points to the Simulation Core located under the city.
  • Recruit promising hackers and warlocks to sustain the group's code-magic.
  • Long-Term Vision

To become the unseen stabilizing backbone of the realm by transforming the Simulation Veil into a legally sanctioned public service. They seek to normalize managed reality so future generations accept subtle reality edits as governance and not as unnatural manipulation.

SuccessionCouncil seats are elected by senior order members and affirmed by a ceremonial Rite of Continuity. Internal candidates often secure endorsements through service, control of archives, or patronage networks. In crises a contingency succession clause allows Custodians to appoint an interim Register for up to a year.
