A little over three hundred years ago a charismatic druid named Aran Tallowroot led a band of exiled wardens and fishermen into a drowned hollow where a colossal, half-submerged tree rose from an inland tide. Aran declared the tree sacred after the goddess Melora answered his desperate prayer during a storm and guided them to fresh water. They bound themselves there, rebuilding ruined causeways and restoring nearby marshland. Over decades the band took in refugees, sailors, rangers, and hermits. A watershed moment occurred a century later when an industrial company clear-cut a nearby ridge to build ironworks and their runoff choked the tree. The Circle resisted with guerrilla sabotage and ritual storms. When the goddess itself manifested inside the trunk and stilled the tides for three nights, local rulers were forced to grant the grove sanctuary. That display became the defining moment: the Circle no longer acted only as stewards but as custodians defending a living temple where the goddess walked among them, mostly from within the Tree of Melora.
