Founder’s Story

After the War of the Mark, the prominent houses met in a neutral border city to avoid renewed hostilities. Twelve representatives, two from the largest houses and one from each of the smaller houses, agreed to create a joint institute to prevent the marks from being used as weapons again and to formalize rules for their application. The founding ceremony included the Oath of Twelve, a public promise that research serving commerce, healing, and safe use of marks would be centralized. Early success included mediating the House Accord that ended the war. The institute was named The Twelve in honor of the initial board of sponsors.
