The Crescent Hand

Phase 1, Founding and Vigilante Justice 120 to 95 years ago: The Crescent Hand grew from responsive thefts aimed at immediate injustices. Early operations were public and performative, returning goods to communities to build local loyalty. Phase 2, Consolidation and Professionalization 95 to 60 years ago: The group adopted codes, carved a formal yet secretive hierarchy, and established cells across the kingdom. It developed skills in forgery, canal navigation, and covert communication. Phase 3, The Night of Copper Rain and Expansion 60 to 42 years ago: The Coinhouse's attempted destruction backfired and the guild leveraged the scandal to cement national influence. Phase 4, Institutional Tension and Covert Statecraft 42 years ago to present: Having gained national reach the guild oscillates between philanthropy and political manipulation. Its successes made it a player in politics, yet internal factions fight over tactics. Recently the guild has become more interested in long-term structural change which has alarmed merchant elites and emboldened violent rivals.

Founder’s Story

The Crescent Hand began when Maris Valen, a laundress whose family starved after a noble reneged on promised grain, stole a ledger from the manor of Lord Harrow and published the ledger in the market. Public outrage forced the manor to redistribute food and exposed a pattern of hoarding across local lords. Survivors of that scandal banded together with other wronged people: pickpockets, smugglers, barkeeps, and a disgraced magistrate. Over the next decades the group evolved from spontaneous vigilantes into an organized network that specialized in targeted thefts, document leaks, and safe passage for those fleeing oppression. A defining watershed moment came forty-two years after the founding, during the Night of Copper Rain. The Coinhouse attempted to crush the guild by framing its leaders for regicide using forged coins and planted evidence. The Crescent Hand countered with a city-wide campaign of revealed papers, staged robberies that returned stolen goods to the poor, and a daring public sting at the Coinhouse that exposed the institution's complicity in bribery. That night the Coinhouse lost both public trust and legal immunity. The guild transformed from a local band to a kingdom-spanning network with formal cells and a code that prized redistribution and secrecy.

The Mechanism of Intent

Public Goals
  • Protect marginalized people from extortion and starvation
  • Expose corrupt officials and return stolen goods to rightful owners
  • Secret Goals
  • Slowly replace tax collectors in select boroughs with guild-friendly administrators to create de facto autonomous zones
  • Keep the forged royal seal as leverage to force structural reforms when other methods fail
  • Current Objectives
  • Distract and topple the regional tax commission by exposing embezzlement and creating public scandal
  • Establish a covert safe route for refugees and political dissidents across the kingdom
  • Secure a permanent, defensible stronghold near a major trade lane without provoking open war with city authorities
  • Long-Term Vision

A kingdom where wealth flows more equitably and where the Crescent Hand is a tolerated, semi-autonomous institution that polices corruption and provides sanctuary. Some within the guild hope to replace certain administrations entirely by cultivating local governance tied to guild-affiliated councils.

StructureDecentralized urban network with central council oversight
SuccessionWhen the First Crescent steps down or is incapacitated, the Crescent Table convenes a private conclave. Each Cellmaster can present a candidate. The conclave votes in secret; the winner must then undertake the Rite of Lanterns, a public gesture of humility and charity that cements their legitimacy. If no candidate reaches consensus, an interim Warden Council governs while negotiations continue.
