The watershed seizure of the high altar 40 years ago by Hagmother Ebonhowl turned the shrine into a living locus of corruption and propelled the coven from secret order to national threat. Since then the Mega-coven has stitched itself into the kingdom's institutions by buying favors, blackmailing officials, and infiltrating city maternity practices. Occasional purges by the Lightward Conclave have cost them members, but each loss was answered by a ruthless internal law that binds families to service and expands their reach into the cities.

Founder’s Story

The group began when a circle of mountain midwives and shrine-keepers discovered an ancient crone buried in a hollowed cave near Highshaw Mountain. She taught them deep, lawful rites that twisted old hospitality oaths into binding bargains. Over generations the circle systematized child-binding rituals and formed an oath-line known as the Chain of Mothers. The watershed moment occurred 40 years ago when a succession crisis at the mountain shrine allowed the ancient crone, now Hagmother Ebonhowl, to seize the high altar and break the shrine's sacred light with a binding lament. That act transformed a symbol of peace into a beacon of corruption and made the Mega-coven into a national force.

    SuccessionSuccession is a ritual of binding called the Rooting. Candidates are presented by the Matriarchs and must undergo a night of unbinding dreams in the Hagmother's inner grove. The current Hagmother appoints a successor by graft or by killing the rival candidate and absorbing their essence. Open rebellion is rare because the Chain enforces legal bonds on families of would-be usurpers.

    Coldly devout to her own order. She treats law as scripture and bargains as sacraments. She rarely shows overt malice but radiates an absolute certainty that small lives are necessary sacrifices.

    Icy, methodical, and ritualistic. She speaks in the cadence of old bargains and treats lives as currency.

    Matrarch Lathra Brambletide— Governor of the northern lowlands infiltration cells

    Charismatic and charming, with a poisonous smile. Skilled at courtly manipulation.

    Sibyl Maereth of the Red Cradle— Master forger and urban infiltrator

    Quiet, patient, intensely observant. Practices subtle divinations and forgery.
