The force began as an emergency flotilla and became permanent after repeated incursions exposed the weakness of Aethelgard’s coastal defenses. During its first century, the squadron expanded from six cutters to a rotating fleet of twenty-one vessels and established the three-channel watch system still used today. Its first triumph came in 1041 TF, when its crews captured a disguised supply barge carrying siege maps and signal crystals. Its first major setback followed in 1096 TF, when a false beacon led four cutters into a basalt reef. One hundred and six sailors died, and the wrecks became a permanent warning marker known as the Four Teeth. In 1187 TF, the Salt-Fog Closure transformed the squadron from a defensive patrol into an instrument of civil control. The closure stopped a rumored plague but also stranded hundreds of civilians and exposed the command’s willingness to sacrifice coastal communities for strategic certainty. That watershed moment split the squadron’s culture between strict quarantine loyalists and rescue-first traditionalists. In recent decades, privateer attacks, leyline disturbances, and political pressure surrounding the 1400 TF renewal have made every patrol both a military operation and a test of Aethelgard’s future.
