The society began as a small fugitive band that smuggled a handful of dragonborn to safety. For decades they operated as an ad hoc rescue collective. Fifty years after their founding they suffered a public catastrophe called the Shattering when a betrayed courier exposed a coastal Hearth to the Iron Vigil, leading to arrests and three public executions. That tragedy split the society into two camps: those who wanted vengeance and aggressive rescue operations, and those who advocated secrecy and slow rebuilding. The compromise created the organizational model still used today. Over the last 40 years the society grew in influence as they taught tradecraft to members and established Hearths in other continents. A watershed moment occurred when the society intercepted and prevented a forced marriage caravan that would have sold over a dozen dragonborn into servitude. The caravan rescue brought them regional renown among dragonborn communities and swelled their ranks, but it also painted a target on their back from Matron Houses and xenophobic groups. Today they are a global network with medium-sized membership and a moral code focused on mutual care even as their methods remain extralegal.
