Originally formed by paladins who turned a destructive act into a long vigil, the order maintained an austere, ritualized life for generations. The order survived famine, a plague that reduced its ranks, and a 70-year period when the surrounding lord profaned parts of the grove for timber. Each crisis forced the order to become more secretive. A watershed moment occurred when a local magistrate attempted to dismantle the ward to mine a 'hot vein' of magical ore. The order assassinated the magistrate's hired mage and, when threatened with retaliation from the lord, publicly disbanded. They continued in the shadows under new leadership and eventually re-emerged as the tenuous, tiny guardian cadre known today.

Founder’s Story

Centuries ago, a small band of mountain paladins and temple priests intercepted a demon-forging ritual and instead of destroying the forge sealed it with holy fire. They bound the demon smith into a deep cavern beneath the Thornveil Wood and vowed to watch it forever. Over the years their single watch evolved into a disciplined order focused on maintenance of the wards and suppression of those who would seek the forge.
