The watershed victory occurred 26 years after the founding, when a merchant ship's river license was quietly transferred to a puppet operator after the Chainwardens exposed the merchant's 'illegitimate' birth record and insinuated a blood debt. That public, legal transfer converted the cult from a hidden support network into a political force. They survived a purge attempt led by a zealous magistrate 18 years ago by sacrificing a scapegoat and staging a miraculous 'curse' that blinded the magistrate, causing the purge to collapse. In recent years their power waned as outside trade brought new authorities and a traveling investigator asked inconvenient questions. The cult shrank to its current tight cell of devoted initiates who now emphasize stealth and legal maneuvering rather than overt displays.

Founder’s Story

The Chainwardens began when a midwife named Hester Vonn returned from a treacherous birth in the upper passes bearing an iron fragment engraved with tiny maternal runes. Hester had been shown a ritual by a dying mountain crone, a ritual that linked mothers across time through a 'Chain' of obligations and debts. Hester used it to save the child and then to stitch together a small network of women who traded favors and secrets so they could dominate births, marriages, and local claims. Over decades the network formalized into a cult after a watershed moment when Hester and her followers coerced an influential merchant into ceding a river license. That victory proved the Chain worked in the realm of human law as effectively as in the ritual realm. From then on they mixed practical bargaining with slow occult influence.

In the long run they want to expand their network into neighboring valleys through marriage bonds and river trade agreements so they can create a regional web of binding obligations.

    SuccessionSuccession is supposed to follow a ritual of 'handing the Chain' through a binding midwifery rite. In practice succession is decided by who controls the ledger, the tower, and the most legal leverage. This leads to conspiratorial maneuvering when the Matron-Anchor ages.
