The Ashen Meridian
The early Meridian was a loose brotherhood of miners and mystics who believed the Sultanate had suppressed the truth of the basin’s ancient disasters. During its first century, the organization focused on preserving ruins and protecting workers from predatory excavation masters. Its watershed moment came during the Emberwake Excavation, when a Sultanate expedition broke through a sealed chamber and triggered a chain of eruptions that killed more than two hundred people. The Meridian’s founders interpreted the disaster as proof that the buried power was waking and that delay would only make the final catastrophe worse. They began performing rites intended to accelerate, guide, and eventually command the awakening. Over time, labor organizers were replaced by zealots, salvage became ritual archaeology, and protest turned into sabotage. The modern Ashen Meridian is the result of that transformation, a movement containing both genuine resistance fighters and fanatics eager to remake the Sunken Sun through fire.
