On the waterfront they become especially bold, hiding in spray and pretending to be harmless puddles before striking at ankles, ropes, and lanterns. Sailors consider them bad luck, but dockside thieves often bargain with them because a mephit that can fog a pier and panic a guard is worth its weight in stolen silver.

False Appearance. While the mephit is motionless and in dim light, fog, spray, or shallow water, it is indistinguishable from a puddle, stain, or broken patch of steam.
Death Burst. When the mephit dies, it explodes in a burst of scalding spray. Each creature within 5 feet of it must make a Dexterity saving throw, taking 4 () fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
