Appearance

Joren Thul is a broad-shouldered, weathered human with a barrel-maker's patience in every movement. His hands are the first thing people notice: thick-knuckled, permanently reddened around the nails, and darkened in the creases by years of grape skins, oak dust, and berry juice. He walks with a careful, heel-first tread on cellar stone, as if every floor might conceal a loose stave. His beard is clipped short except for a stubborn wedge beneath the chin, while his hair has gone iron-gray in uneven bands. He smells faintly of crushed currants, damp oak, and clean vinegar. The unexpected thing about him is his delicacy: for a man built like a cooper, he handles a wine thief, glass pipette, or fragile blossom with the steadiness of a jeweler. When rattled, his breathing becomes audible through his nose, slow and measured, while his voice gets quieter rather than louder.

Height5 feet 9 inches
BuildCompact and heavy through the chest and forearms, with the dense, practical strength of someone who moves casks rather than lifts weights for display
EyesHazel-brown, with tiny red veins from years of cellar dust and poor sleep during harvest
HairIron gray with dark brown remaining at the nape, usually combed back with wet fingers
SkinSun-browned olive with reddish weathering across the nose and forearms

Measured and plainspoken, with a faint Aundairian rural cadence. He pauses before important judgments, as if letting the words settle like sediment.”

Distinguishing Features

Hands permanently stained in the creases with dark red and purple from years of grape and berry work.

A clipped beard with one pale streak beneath the chin, resembling a brush dipped in flour.

Taps wooden surfaces twice before opening a barrel, a habit he claims helps him 'hear whether the cask is settled.'

His breath is usually quiet and controlled, but becomes a deliberate, audible count when he is upset.

Carries the faint layered scent of currants, oak, vinegar, and monastery soap.

Voice

A low, dry baritone with a faint rasp from years of cellar dust. He breathes through his nose between phrases, and when worried he counts his breaths audibly before continuing.

Clothing

A faded burgundy work coat over a cream linen shirt, patched brown trousers, thick wool socks, and soft-soled cellar shoes. His leather apron is stained almost black at the hem and carries a row of wooden sampling cups, chalk, twine, and a small folding knife.

Body Language

He keeps his hands folded behind his back when listening, but his thumbs rub slowly against one another as if testing the grain of invisible wood. When making a decision, he leans slightly toward the nearest barrel or table. Under stress, his shoulders rise and his nostrils flare before he answers.
