Hadrun of Kettle Ward
Watch Sergeant
Hadrun of Kettle Ward
Species
Human
Appearance
Hadrun is a broad, compact man whose shoulders seem permanently braced against an unseen crowd. His coat hangs badly from him, too tight across the upper arms and too long at the cuffs, where old stitching has been reinforced with neat strips of blue kettle-cloth. He moves with a measured, sideways caution, giving doors a wide berth and never brushing one with his shoulder. His narrow shield is painted with three white bars, each bar polished so often that the paint has become glassy. His most immediately noticeable feature is his mouth: when he speaks, he keeps his lips carefully closed, but when he eats or laughs, his blunt front teeth show a small metal glint from a row of silver caps. The intimidating breadth of his body is contradicted by his delicate, almost ceremonial way of handling cups, keys, and written notices.
“Low, even, and economical. Hadrun pauses before nouns when choosing the safest word, and his voice becomes almost gentle when speaking to frightened people.”

Distinguishing Features
A narrow shield painted with three immaculate white bars, polished obsessively despite its dented rim.
Silver caps on his blunt front teeth that flash whenever he eats, laughs, or clenches his jaw.
A coat repaired with blue kettle-cloth in several places, making him look partially wrapped in an old uniform from another district.
He visibly recoils from doors that have been repaired more than once.
His keys are arranged by the sound they make rather than by the locks they open.
Voice
“A low, dry baritone with the careful rhythm of someone reading a safety notice aloud. His rare jokes arrive without changes in expression, making listeners realize several seconds later that he was being funny.”
Clothing
A dark Watch coat reinforced at the elbows and shoulders, a faded blue waist sash, thick wool trousers tucked into tarred boots, fingerless gloves, and a high leather collar repaired with mismatched brass thread. His belt carries too many keys, each tagged with a strip of colored cloth.
Body Language
Hadrun stands with his feet angled toward the nearest open route and keeps one thumb hooked beneath the edge of his shield. He rarely gestures broadly. When upset, he rubs the shield's three white bars with the heel of his palm until his knuckles redden. When lying, he becomes unnaturally still.
