Appearance
Milo Varrin looks like a ruined courtier abandoned inside the earth. His once-tailored finery has collapsed into strips of gray and wine-red rag that hang from a narrow frame, the cloth stiff with mineral dust, grease, and old rainwater stains. He moves in a constant hunched crawl, palms and bare toes touching the stone when he is startled or excited, as if his body prefers the cave floor to standing. His skin is pale and papery in places, darkened and almost leather-like over the knuckles, shoulders, and knees from years of scraping rock. A waxy black coat of cave soot frames one side of his face, while the other side is strangely fastidious, clean-washed and perfumed with bitter herbs. Around him skitter hundreds of cockroaches that he treats like attendants, and the contradiction of his posture and his leftover nobility makes him seem both degraded and absurdly dignified at once.
“Measured, formal, and unexpectedly intimate when he trusts someone. He speaks as though every sentence might later be entered into an account book, but his bitterness leaks through when old loyalties are mentioned.”

One of his boots has been replaced by a fitted iron brace scavenged from a mine cart.
His left ring finger still bears a signet ring he cannot remove.
His fingertips are ink-stained, even in the cave.
Cockroaches gather in tidy rings around him as though awaiting orders.
Voice
“Dry, cultured, and slightly hoarse, with the clipped precision of a man still trying to sound like a lord while living like a beast.”
Clothing
Faded noble doublet cut into tatters, patched travel cloak, cracked leather gloves without fingertips, rope belt, and soft-soled boots wrapped in cloth strips.
Body Language
Hunched low, shoulders forward, with sudden feline bursts of motion; he often braces on hands and feet when listening closely or when angered.
