Appearance
Mara Vey is a narrow, long-limbed woman whose movements have the careful economy of someone perpetually walking across thin ice. Her face is handsome in a severe, tired way, with a small hooked nose, wind-chapped lips, and a pale scar running from the corner of her mouth to her jaw. Her skin has the dry, warm texture of old parchment, though faint ember-red lines appear beneath it whenever she invokes an infernal clause. Her hair is braided tightly against her skull, but several silver curls have escaped and refuse to stay pinned. She smells of lamp oil, iron ink, and cinnamon. The unexpected contradiction is her hands: despite her intimidating reputation, they are soft, meticulously groomed, and decorated with tiny painted flowers beneath the nails. She leaves behind the impression of a locked door that has already decided whether to open.
“Her voice is low, dry, and resonant, with a soft caravan cadence beneath clipped court diction. She pauses before important nouns, as though checking whether the word has legal authority.”

Distinguishing Features
A scar from the corner of her mouth to her jaw that reddens when she hears a broken oath.
A brass seal-ring on nine fingers, each engraved with a treaty symbol.
Ember-red lines beneath the skin of her palms.
A black ledger whose pages are warm even in winter.
A shadow that sometimes turns its head before she does.
Voice
“Low, dry, and deliberate, with a faint rasp like paper dragged across stone.”
Clothing
A dark plum traveling coat lined with faded treaty maps, a high-collared ochre blouse, fitted charcoal trousers, and soft red leather boots. She wears a brass seal-ring on every finger except the left thumb, where an old burn scar circles the joint.
Body Language
Mara keeps her shoulders square and her chin slightly lowered, as if listening to a hostile witness. She points with two fingers rather than one. When someone lies, she tilts her head a few degrees and lightly taps her thumb against the side of her index finger, mimicking a quill scratching paper.
