Ilyan Vardeli
Species
Lightfoot halfling
Appearance
A compact lightfoot halfling with the careful, weatherproof look of someone who has slept under more bridges than roofs. He moves with a quick, rolling gait, always leaning slightly to the left as if listening for a road just out of sight. His hands are ink-stained to the first knuckle, and his breath makes a faint whistling note when he is concentrating. At first glance he seems brisk and unapproachable; then he kneels to speak to a child or a stray dog with solemn tenderness. His unexpected softness is at odds with the hard, unsmiling set of his mouth.
“Measured and spare, full of precise directions and remembered names. He seldom raises his voice; when angry, he becomes quieter and more exact.”

Distinguishing Features
His breath whistles faintly through his teeth when he concentrates, but goes completely silent when he is frightened.
His leftward lean and listening gait are noticeable almost immediately.
Ink has settled permanently into the creases of his fingertips.
He carries a notebook with a different paper color for each region he has traveled through.
Voice
“A low, clear tenor with a dry, courteous edge. His breath whistles faintly when he is thinking; when rattled, the whistle vanishes and his voice goes very still.”
Clothing
A faded moss-green traveling coat with a deep inner pocket for folded maps, a patched russet vest, close-fitting trousers, and soft-soled boots. A blue thread is sewn into the cuff of his left sleeve, the only bright color he allows himself.
Body Language
He angles his left ear toward whoever is speaking and keeps his weight forward on the balls of his feet. When uneasy, he holds his breath for a beat, then lets it out through the faint whistle between his teeth. He gestures with a pencil as though it were a compass needle.
