Ozu Tekkai
Species
Tortle
Appearance
Old Man Ozu is a heavy, low-slung tortle whose domed shell is polished smooth along the rim from decades of ducking through brush. He walks with a slow, rolling sway, but his hands move with startling speed: long blunt claws sort seeds, turn pages, and tie tiny knots without seeming to hurry. His shell is dark olive with pale, maplike seams, and a dusting of silver lichen clings to its ridges. The unexpected thing is his laugh, a bright, breathy cackle that sounds far younger than the rest of him. He leaves the impression of a mossy stone that has just told a good joke.
“Measured and conversational, with precise names for plants and places. His sentences often begin simply and end with a question.”

Distinguishing Features
A shell rim polished smooth by years of brushing through undergrowth.
Silver lichen grows in narrow seams across his shell, and he refuses to scrape it away.
His quick, meticulous hands contrast with his slow, rolling walk.
His laugh is a light, breathy cackle that surprises people expecting a gravelly elder.
Voice
“A low, dry rasp with a soft bubbling cadence; when amused, it breaks into a surprisingly youthful cackle.”
Clothing
A faded indigo shoulder wrap pinned with a carved seed pod, a weatherproof vest sewn from waxed leaves, and a cord belt carrying chalk, jars, and a small wooden cup. He wears no shoes.
Body Language
He keeps his weight slightly forward, as if listening through the ground. When uneasy, he rubs one thumb along the smooth edge of his shell. In company he turns his whole body toward whoever is speaking, even if doing so takes several slow steps.
