Appearance
Malik is a broad, weather-darkened man whose presence fills a doorway before he speaks. His skin carries the matte sheen of someone constantly dusted with mineral spray, and his hands are ridged with old rope burns, white scar tissue, and black crescents of canal silt that never quite wash out. He walks with a rolling, deliberate gait, as if every floor might conceal a weak plank, yet he can pivot with startling speed when a sluice fails. His face is square and severe, softened only by tired crow's-feet and a small silver tooth that flashes when he smiles. He smells of wet stone, lamp oil, boiled mint, and iron filings. The contradiction is that his intimidating body is wrapped in meticulously mended garments decorated with tiny embroidered ducks, each one representing a concession he has successfully brought back into compliance.
“His voice is low, dry, and carrying, with the clipped rhythm of instructions shouted across rushing water. He makes bureaucratic language sound like a comedy routine without ever seeming unserious.”

Distinguishing Features
A silver-capped front tooth visible only when he smiles.
A crescent-shaped scar behind his left ear from the Collapse of Nine.
Tiny embroidered ducks hidden throughout his clothing.
A brass key ring containing keys to locks that no longer exist.
One permanently swollen knuckle that he calls his 'appeal department'.
Voice
“A low baritone with the resonance of a lockhouse bell, often quiet enough to make listeners lean in and loud enough to stop an argument across a crowded quay.”
Clothing
A sleeveless indigo steward's coat reinforced with waxed canvas, a faded white undershirt, knee-high river boots, a brass badge stamped with The Canal Factors' seal, a red sash full of keys, and a soft cap embroidered with tiny ducks. His coat is patched so carefully that the repairs form a map of the waterways.
Body Language
Malik plants both feet before speaking, folds his hands over the head of his cudgel, and leans forward as though listening for water beneath the floor. When amused, he tilts his head and rubs the silver tooth with his tongue. When angry, he stops moving entirely.
