Appearance
Teco is a broad-shouldered human man with the compact strength of someone who has hauled wet nets, corpses, and stubborn children out of rivers for most of his life. His skin is sun-browned and permanently freckled with pale salt marks along the forearms. His black hair is clipped close on one side and hangs in a stiff, uneven braid on the other, usually threaded with a copper fishhook. He moves with a boatman's rolling balance even on dry ground, but when danger appears he becomes unnervingly still, like a heron watching beneath the surface. His hands are scarred, blunt-nailed, and always smell faintly of cedar oil. The unexpected thing about him is his immaculate smile, bright and almost boyish, which appears most often when he is furious.
“Low, clipped, and conversational. He speaks as though every sentence must survive a strong current.”

A narrow scar running from the corner of his mouth to his jaw
Salt-white markings on both forearms that never wash away
A missing section of his right little finger
An unnaturally cheerful smile when angry
Voice
“A low riverbank rumble with a dry warmth beneath it. When angry, he speaks more softly, not louder.”
Clothing
A sleeveless indigo river coat over a linen shirt, patched leather trousers, high reed-woven boots, a red sash containing fishing line and chalk, and a salt-stained oilskin cloak. His coat is fastened with polished wooden toggles carved as tiny fish.
Body Language
Teco leans slightly forward as if listening to a current beneath the floor. He keeps one thumb hooked through his belt cord and touches the copper fishhook in his braid whenever he lies. When relaxed, he sits sideways in chairs. When frightened, he smiles and starts cleaning something.
