Appearance
Master Yusef ibn-Ahmad is a lean, sun-browned human with the dry, carefully preserved look of someone who has spent too many years beneath stone and too few beneath open sky. His hazel eyes are enlarged slightly by wire-rimmed reading lenses, and their constant motion makes it seem as though he is measuring every person in the room for hidden vibrations. Silver threads run through his dark hair, which is tied neatly at the nape with a strip of faded blue cloth. His fingers are narrow and callused from stylus work, yet the nails are always clean and precisely trimmed. He moves with tiny, economical steps, never dragging a slipper or brushing against a wall. The unexpected contradiction is that, despite his quiet scholarly appearance, his hands are scarred with pale burns and his left shoulder sits slightly higher than the right, injuries earned during a cave-in while he dragged three apprentices through a collapsing inspection tunnel. His presence leaves an impression of stillness under pressure, like a sealed door behind which something enormous is listening.
“Soft, dry, and carefully paced. Yusef speaks as though every word must be placed where it will not disturb a sleeping mechanism.”

Distinguishing Features
Wire-rimmed lenses repaired with a twist of copper wire.
A crescent-shaped burn scar across the left palm.
A silver streak in his hair shaped like a narrow lightning fork.
A habit of pressing his thumb against the first joint of his index finger while counting tremor beats.
A faint tremor in his left hand that vanishes whenever he is writing.
Voice
“A low, papery murmur with a faint rasp from years of breathing mineral dust. He rarely raises it, but when he does, the sound is startlingly sharp and carries through stone corridors.”
Clothing
A charcoal scribe's tunic lined with layers of gray felt to dampen incidental noise, loose brown trousers, a wide utility sash, and soft cloth slippers reinforced with thin leather soles. His cuffs are stained with slate dust and blue-black wax. A faded blue cord at his collar is the last gift from his daughter.
Body Language
Yusef keeps his shoulders slightly hunched and his head tilted toward the nearest wall. When concentrating, he closes one eye and rests two fingers against a solid surface. He rarely gestures broadly, but when he does, the movement is abrupt and decisive. In moments of fear, he becomes unnaturally still rather than visibly agitated.
