Tess
Stable-master and animal handler
Tess
Species
Half-orc
Appearance
Tess is a broad-shouldered half-orc who seems to occupy more space than her height should allow, not because she is careless, but because she is always leaning, reaching, bracing, or making room for an animal that is not there. Her skin has the muted green-gray tone of weathered slate, with a fine texture roughened by wind, soap, and years of stable dust. Her hands are the first thing most people notice: thick-knuckled, rope-burned, and permanently darkened beneath the nails, yet astonishingly gentle when they test a horse's teeth or remove a burr from a hound's paw. She moves with the rolling balance of someone who has spent a lifetime on shifting ground, planting each foot as if the floor might suddenly become a wagon deck. Her lower tusks are capped in polished copper, an unexpectedly delicate touch against her otherwise practical appearance. She smells faintly of lanolin, rain, apples, and hot iron. The contradictory impression she leaves is of immense physical force held inside almost ceremonial patience, as though a battering ram has chosen to become a lullaby.
“Low, measured, and unexpectedly musical, with a rough edge that softens when she speaks to animals or children. She pauses before answering serious questions, as though listening for the truth in the room.”

Distinguishing Features
Copper caps on her lower tusks, polished by habit until they gleam.
Huge, work-worn hands that can restrain a frightened draft horse or thread a needle with equal care.
A habit of tilting her head toward distant hoofbeats before anyone else hears them.
A broad shadow-like silhouette created by her heavy shoulders and constantly draped work coat.
A faint crescent of white hair at her right temple, caused by an old childhood streak rather than age.
Voice
“A low contralto with a dry rasp, like leather rubbed smooth by years of handling. Her laugh is brief, surprised, and warmer than people expect.”
Clothing
A sleeveless charcoal work coat over a faded russet shirt, reinforced trousers tucked into mud-caked riding boots, a leather apron marked with old grease stains, and a belt hung with brushes, chalk, twine, and tiny brass bells. Her copper-capped tusks match the buckles on her gloves.
Body Language
Tess stands with her feet wide and her shoulders slightly angled, leaving a clear path toward every stall door. She rarely gestures with her arms, relying instead on tiny whistles, finger taps, and changes in posture that animals notice before people do. When someone lies, she pauses with one hand resting flat on a saddle blanket.
